Biblical Creation is Science
It’s difficult at times to have thoughts that one wants to discuss but have no one to discuss them with. I don’t mean to appear arrogant, but I also don’t want to be apologetic. I have no difficulty believing in God and His creation at the same time as believing in solid science. By that, I mean science that does not contradict itself.
Here are two statements that I find to be in contradiction:
- The andromeda and Milky Way galaxies are on a path to collide and merge into a super-galaxy in approximately 4-7 billion years.
- Redshift (the doppler effect in visible light) is evidence that the universe, since the Big Bang, is continuously expanding, and this expansion is accelerating.
My difficulty is that posit 2. (expansion) contradicts posit 1. (collision). My difficulty is resolved if I disagree with 2. – that the universe is not expanding – that Redshift (supported evidentially) has another cause, and I believe that cause is Gravity. The connection between light and gravity is a fascinating aspect of physics. According to the general theory of relativity, gravity can be understood as bends and curves in the fabric of space-time that affect the motions of galaxies, stars, planets, and even light.
Gravitational lensing was first proven during a total solar eclipse in 1919, the first observational evidence for the bending of light by gravity, as predicted by Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity. Anything with mass makes a dent in space-time, causing objects to be attracted to each other. This is the concept of gravitational redshift, where light loses energy as it travels out of a gravitational field. So, light from a distant galaxy will be red shifted as it passes by a nearer galaxy, which can be misinterpreted as expansion. Further, light from an even more distant galaxy will be red shifted by the distant galaxy as well as by the nearer galaxy, giving the impression that expansion is accelerating.
So, by stating that I don’t believe posit 2. I am stating that I don’t believe in the Big Bang, which means I must think about other causes for the cosmic microwave background (CMB), the electromagnetic radiation that is pervasive throughout the universe. The Big Bang theory (the leading explanation for the origin of the cosmos) suggests that the universe started with an infinitely hot and dense single point that inflated and stretched over 13.7 billion years. An alternative explanation is in Biblical creationism. The Voice, a modern language, dynamic equivalent English translation of the Bible, prefaces Genesis 1-1 with the summation; “Out of nowhere, time, space, and all the living whirl forth as God speaks the universe into existence.”
Einstein’s equation E=mc2, formulated in his theory of special relativity, expresses the relationship between energy (E) and mass (m). In essence, it states that mass is energy expressed by time, and Genesis tells us that God spoke time into existence, creating everything. CMB is easily explained as the remnant electromagnetic noise resulting from the creation of mass by the creation of time.
Finally, if the universe is expanding, it must be expanding into something, which presumes a limit; but God’s universe is everywhere as long as time exists, and space is infinite. So, I don’t agree with the Big Bang, the expanding universe concept, let alone accelerating expansion of the universe.
But I absolutely believe in the Trinity God.
