“Close” Isn’t Close Enough
Scripture: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”
—Matthew 7:21 (NIV)
We’ve all heard the saying: “Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.” It’s a humorous reminder that “almost” doesn’t really count—except in rare exceptions. You don’t almost win the race. You don’t almost cross the finish line. And when it comes to following Jesus, “almost” isn’t enough.
In Matthew 7:21, Jesus makes it clear: just saying the right words or having a superficial relationship with Him isn’t what leads to life. He calls us beyond proximity—beyond church attendance, beyond the appearance of faith—and into real surrender and obedience.
Many get close to truth, grace, or transformation, but never fully step in. They admire Jesus, respect His teachings, maybe even call Him “Lord,” but they never truly follow. And in the Kingdom of God, almost isn’t enough.
But here’s the good news: the door is open. God isn’t looking for perfection—He’s looking for hearts that are fully His. Today, you can choose to go beyond “close” and step into a real, living relationship with Jesus.
Reflection Question:
Are you merely close to Jesus—or are you walking with Him in full surrender?
Prayer:
Lord, I don’t want to just be close. I want to be Yours—fully and completely. Help me to follow You not just with my words, but with my actions, my choices, and my heart. Lead me beyond “almost” into the fullness of Your will for my life. Amen.
